Normally, when we go on vacation, our itinerary is something I like to call planned. We make sure all our time is accounted for, filled with things to see and do. Never having been on a resort vacation before (or anywhere hot, for that matter) we decided to play it by ear, and make the decisions when we got there.
The travel day is always a bit rocky, and we got to the resort exhausted and a little bit carsick from the drive from the airport to the resort. We had a not-so-great supper, and fell into bed.
Resort orientation started at 10:00 am the next morning, so we had our tour of our home-away-from-home with a lovely guide. She showed us the water sport area, the restaurants, bars and spa, the library and games area, the pool volleyball, the excursions desk, and where to find beach towels.
We booked our excursions for the next two days, and then went to play on the beach. And relax in the sun. And cool off in the ocean. And get a mojito from the bar. And pull on the sun dress to wander over to the beachside restaurant for lunch. And then go back to napping on the deck chair.
It took me a couple of days to get used to being relaxed.
The next day, our first excursion was a catamaran cruise down the coast, to a seaside town where we transferred to chauffeured vans that took us to the mud bath, the drive-in volcano, the plantation and the waterfall.
The plantation was really interesting, with a guided tour that included descriptions of all the trees and plants, as well as a demonstration of how to open a coconut, how sugar is extracted from the cane, and how cocoa is made. Included in the plantation tour was a Caribbean style lunch of fish, rice, local bread and a coleslaw type dish.
After being driven back to the boat, we sailed off to a coastline for a bit of snorkeling. I hadn’t snorkeled before, and wasn’t prepared to jump off the back of the boat, but I did. I then proceeded to hyperventilate for about ten minutes, before getting a grip and sticking my face in the water. (I am now a big fan of snorkeling, and I don’t mind jumping off the back of a boat, either.)
The excursion finished with music, local beer and wickedly strong rum punch on board the boat. Once we got back to the hotel, Chadd had to “rest” for a few hours. I had stuck to the beer, so I watched some tv and painted my nails. Eventually, I woke him up for dinner, and had an early night. Tomorrow, the zip line!
